The gap
Autonomous vehicles today rely on perception carried inside the vehicle — cameras, lidar, radar — combined with HD maps maintained by centralized operators. The road itself is passive: it provides no authoritative guidance a vehicle can trust. Regulatory approval is per-vehicle or per-fleet, requiring each manufacturer to certify its sensor stack for every jurisdiction it operates in, an approach that does not scale.
The result is that autonomous driving remains certification-bound: a vehicle certified in one jurisdiction cannot operate in another without re-certification, and the road infrastructure itself provides no structural safety guarantee.
The invention
A three-tier environmental device architecture — passive credentialed markers, active sentinels, and cognitive infrastructure agents — that produces primary route authorization through governance-credentialed marker sequences. Each track segment carries a per-segment authority attestation specifying operating class authorizations. The route manifest is composed across multiple segments and authorities as the vehicle traverses.
Marker-track transport handles progressive-density fallback (fully-marked, partially-marked, unmarked stretches), Byzantine-robust platooning using marker sequences as a shared coordination reference, adversarial marker rejection through the credentialing apparatus, and multi-class operator parameterization for passenger AVs, commercial freight, emergency response, and defense.
The inventive step
Prior art routes autonomous vehicles through unit-centric perception — HD maps, onboard sensor fusion, and cloud-based routing. Marker-track inverts this: the road segment is the primary navigation reference, approved by its regulatory authority through governance-credentialed markers, and a vehicle traversing the segment is authorized by reading the credential, not by its onboard stack. Certification shifts from per-vehicle to per-segment.
The departure is that regulatory authority is encoded in the road, not granted to the vehicle — a vehicle that can read and verify a marker credential is structurally authorized to operate on that segment, without per-vehicle certification.
Alone, and in composition
On its own, marker-track transport is a certification-scalable autonomous driving infrastructure — the road provides authority, the vehicle verifies it, and regulatory approval shifts from per-vehicle to per-segment. It applies to highway driving, indoor warehouse routing, mining, agriculture, and any domain where credentialed markers can delineate navigable paths.
In composition, marker-track is the spatial routing layer that governed actuation acts on — the vehicle reads markers, composes a route manifest, and passes the authorized route through the actuation governor for graduated execution.
