The gap
Settlement today requires an intermediary — a bank, a blockchain, a payment processor — to establish trust between transacting parties. In physical-world transactions where two parties are co-present (a vehicle at a toll gate, an EV at a charger, a vessel at a port berth), the settlement overhead exceeds the transaction value. There is no way for two credentialed parties to settle directly, without intermediary, without consensus, without pre-negotiated session state.
This forces every physical-world transaction onto infrastructure designed for digital-native payments, adding latency, cost, and intermediary risk to transactions that should be instantaneous and trustless by virtue of physical co-presence.
The invention
A bilateral settlement primitive: two governance-credentialed observations within a declared spatial-temporal proximity window constitute a finalized, non-repudiable, lineage-preserved settlement — without intermediary, without consensus, without pre-negotiated session state. The settlement is the two parties' signed agreement; the architecture admits no external validation requirement.
Supporting mechanisms include structured counter-offer exchange, credentialed escrow integration for conditional release, a governance-credentialed dispute mechanism, and parameterizations for tolling, V2G charging, continuity-settled digital currency, and instant cross-border settlement without blockchain.
The inventive step
Prior art settles transactions through platform intermediaries (Visa, PayPal), consensus networks (Bitcoin, Ethereum), or legal contracts. Matched-pair settlement settles through spatial-temporal proximity — two credentialed parties within a declared window produce a settlement that is final by architectural construction, not by intermediary attestation.
The departure is that physical co-presence replaces the intermediary: the spatial-temporal proximity window is the settlement mechanism, making every physical-world interaction a potential settlement event without infrastructure.
Alone, and in composition
On its own, matched-pair settlement enables direct physical-world transactions: vehicle-to-infrastructure tolling, EV charging settlement, port vessel coordination, ride-share micropayments, and retail point-of-sale without a payment processor.
In composition, matched-pair is the atomic settlement primitive that n-party coordination and the governed marketplace compose into multi-party ceremonies and platform-less marketplaces.
